What’s the DEAL With CBD DOG TREATS?

You may have heard of the medical use, and effects of CBD products in treating many ailments and symptoms in humans. Now, these products are also available for dogs. CBD is derived from the same hemp plants that produce the highly controlled drug, marijuana, however the effects of the CBD are different than the effects that give you the typical “high” that you get from THC in marijuana. CBD is legal in the United States as on 2018.

While there are many CBD products on the market for pets, today we will be discussing CBD treats specifically. These are similar to regular treats, however have CBD oil infused into them for a fast acting effect. CBD in pets has been known to help with anxiety, joint pain, and to promote sleep. However, it can also be misused.

I have seen owners in the past purposely giving multiple CBD treats to their puppies to aid with their hyperactivity, and to promote sleep. I disagree with this practice. Drugging your dog with high levels of CBD oil is not an appropriate, safe, or accepted way to treat hyperactivity in dogs, let alone puppies. Forcing sleep upon a young dog is not beneficial to the development of a growing mind and body. Puppies need much mental and physical stimulation and have a lot of energy. If this is not something you can handle, I would advise against getting a puppy.

It is also important to understand the possible side effects from using these treats in excess. These include upset stomach, dry mouth, low blood pressure and more. Long term effects are not even yet to be determined because they were recently introduced to the market.

As always, I advise you to do your research. Here is a helpful website I found useful in my search for information: https://www.holistapet.com/potential-side-effects-of-cbd-for-dogs-and-cats/
