All About RESCUE DOGS and TRAINING THEM!

While I cannot speak on training an older rescue dog from experience, I have to believe it must be similar to a puppy. Every dog is different, and the so are the circumstances that brought them into a shelter environment. Understanding possible previous abuse, previous routines, and other factors are important when learning about your new family member, and how to best train them to be the best they can be!

I found an amazing post from another pet blog, The Spruce Pets, discussing how to train your rescue dog! Here is the link: https://www.thesprucepets.com/train-a-shelter-or-rescue-dog-1118219

Because I have no personal experience, I turned to this post for guidance. It offers fantastic insight into what it is like to rescue a dog from a shelter, what you should expect, and how to move forward.

If you read my last blog post on the importance of crate training, this blog presses the importance of it also, except in regards to older dogs. The blog included a whole paragraph entitled, Plan on Crate Training, where the author, Amy Bender, offers this idea, “A crate is also helpful because it gives your shelter dog a place of its own.” In addition to the other added benefits of utilizing a crate, this is another way to help make your new family member feel safe and comfortable in their new home. It will be their own safe space, in a world that can be scary.

Additionally, I also think it is helpful that Bender included a paragraph on common mistakes that people make when they bring home a rescue dog. It’s a helpful resource to look into for all of the possibilities that come with rescue dogs, and what they have possibly experienced in their previous homes. It helps to understand these things in order to better understand and communicate with your dog!
